A thrilling race unfolded at Aqueduct on Saturday, with Iron Honor claiming the spotlight and a significant milestone on the road to the Kentucky Derby 2026. This young horse, trained by the renowned Chad Brown, demonstrated his potential by winning the Grade 3 Gotham race, earning him 50 crucial qualifying points.
The race featured a field of eight talented 3-year-olds, each with their own aspirations. Iron Honor, with jockey Manny Franco in the saddle, engaged in an intense stretch duel, ultimately prevailing by a length. It was an impressive display of determination and skill.
Iron Honor's journey began with a successful six-furlong debut at the New York City track in December, where he defeated seven competitors with odds of 5-1. His ownership group, led by St. Elias Stable and including William Lawrence and Glassman Racing, witnessed his talent firsthand.
Trainer Chad Brown expressed his surprise at Iron Honor's early success, stating, "I ran him to gain experience, but his win truly caught my attention. He achieved something unexpected by winning at three-quarters, a feat only accomplished by exceptional horses."

The race began with a trio of horses leading the pack: Iron Honor, the favorite at 4-5 odds, Crown the Buckeye at 9-1, and the longshot Dirty Rich at 22-1. However, as the race progressed, Dirty Rich began to falter, leaving Iron Honor and Crown the Buckeye to battle it out in a match race for the final quarter-mile.
Jockey Manny Franco shared his strategy, explaining, "My plan was to stay close, as my horse also came from a sprint. I knew I could be right there, and that's exactly what we did."
As they approached the stretch, Crown the Buckeye held a half-length advantage on the inside of Iron Honor. But Iron Honor fought back, taking the lead by a head and eventually winning by an official margin of one length.
Trainer Chad Brown praised Iron Honor's performance, noting the challenges of being sandwiched between horses. "He showed great determination to overcome the pressure from both sides and wear down Crown the Buckeye. I'm pleased with the result and the fact that he finished well ahead of the third-place horse."
The top five finishers earned Kentucky Derby points, with Iron Honor claiming the maximum 50 points. Crown the Buckeye, Right to Party, and Exhibition Only, who finished second to fourth, are not nominated for the Triple Crown. Balboa picked up five points for his fifth-place finish.
Iron Honor's next potential challenge is the Wood Memorial (G2) on April 4, offering even more Derby qualifying points. Trainer Brown plans to keep Iron Honor in New York, stating, "I want to minimize travel for the horse. With the harsh winter we've had, hopefully, luck will turn our way. He'll continue training in New York and run in the Wood Memorial if he remains healthy."
