Three years after a tragic shark attack took the life of Simon 'Bucky' Baccanello, the community of Elliston has come together in an extraordinary display of unity and generosity. Bucky's death in May 2023, while surfing at Walkers Rock, left a profound impact on the community. The 46-year-old avid surfer and fisherman was a beloved member of the Elliston Area School, where he taught health and physical education. His passion for bringing people together and his involvement in junior sports, football, and tennis made him a well-liked figure in the community.
Instead of focusing on the tragedy, Bucky's loved ones and friends chose to honor his memory through action. They organized a 720-kilometer relay race, involving 38 runners, to raise funds for a new community sporting facility in Elliston. The initial goal was set at $300,000, but the community's outpouring of support far exceeded expectations, resulting in a remarkable $500,000 raised.
The relay race, organized by Pete McDonald, a friend of Bucky's, was a testament to the community's strength and resilience. The overwhelming support and generosity of the runners and the entire community left a lasting impression on those involved.
"The money is still pouring in, it's just unbelievable," said Pete McDonald, emphasizing the community's dedication to honoring Bucky's memory. The Elliston Area School principal, Chad Fleming, expressed his awe at the support and camaraderie displayed by the runners. He envisions a lasting impact on the town's culture, stating, "Even building that committee is bringing people together and I feel like that's gonna be the end result of Simon's legacy in our town."
