Italy's latest archaeological discovery has unearthed a significant early Christian church beneath a former fish market in the ancient city of Oderzo. This find, described as 'exceptionally significant' by officials, sheds light on the city's rich Roman and early Christian history. The church, dating back to the fourth and fifth centuries A.D., is believed to be the earliest known Christian place of worship in ancient Oderzo. This discovery is particularly intriguing as it coincides with the period when Christianity was rapidly gaining prominence within the Roman Empire. The church's remains, including intricate polychrome mosaic floors and human burials, offer a glimpse into the religious practices and community dynamics of the time. The excavation, which began last November, has revealed a large rectangular church measuring about 75 feet wide and at least 98 feet long, with a central aisle and two side aisles. The foundations, up to 1.2 meters thick and built from brick bonded with mortar, rest on wooden piles driven into the alluvial soil, a construction technique widely used in antiquity. The discovery of four burials containing the remains of seven individuals alongside the church provides further insight into the community's burial practices and religious significance. The church's eastern end has not yet been excavated, suggesting the complex may be even larger than currently known. The ongoing archaeological investigation aims to provide additional information about both the cemetery and those buried there. Evidence suggests that the church was eventually abandoned, stripped of building materials, and partially destroyed during the Middle Ages. This discovery not only adds to our understanding of early Christian worship in ancient Italy but also highlights the importance of archaeological research in uncovering the past.
